About Hugh Bailey

Hugh Bailey joined Sanford Law Group in October 2021. He brings a diverse range of legal experience to the firm. He is a native North Carolinian, born and raised in New Bern. Hugh graduated from North Carolina State University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After his undergraduate experience, Hugh worked for 10 years as an outdoor educator with the North Carolina Outward Bound School and the Nantahala Outdoor Center. He guided internationally in Scotland, Honduras, Mexico, Malaysia, and Borneo.

In 2003, Hugh attended Vermont Law School, one of the nation’s top environmental law programs. Hugh worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Johnston, Harnett, and Lee Counties for over six years where he prosecuted misdemeanor and felony cases including traffic, DWI, drug and homicide. In addition to his work as a prosecutor, Hugh worked as an Assistant Attorney General with the Transportation Section of the North Carolina Attorney General’s office and in a small General Practice firm.

Hugh was the former president of the North Carolina Bar, District 12 and was nominated and served on the North Carolina Oil and Gas Commission. He currently serves on the board for the Ruth Sheets Center at Edenton Street United Methodist Church.  Hugh resides in Raleigh with his wife, Ashley and their two children (and his yellow lab, Zeke).  He enjoys spending his free time paddling and fishing the waters of Eastern North Carolina.

Hugh focuses his practice in the areas of Real Estate, Wills and Trusts, Environmental Issues, Traffic, and Criminal Law.
